Moynihan Train Hall Opening

After 3 years of construction and decades of planning, Moynihan Train Hall will open to the public tomorrow. The train hall expands Penn Station (the nation’s busiest train station) across 8th Avenue into the historic James A. Farley Post Office Building, which was designed by the original Penn Station's architects, McKim, Mead, and White. The new station will allow Amtrak’s Northeast Corridor and long-distance platforms to be relocated from Penn Station, providing more room, greater aesthetics, accessibility for passengers with disabilities, all within a grand structure featuring a sunlit atrium reminiscent of the original Penn Station at the size of the Grand Central Terminal’s Main Hall. The 255,000-square-foot train hall with 92-foot-high skylights cost $1.6 billion and expands the existing Penn Station rail complex's concourse space by 50 percent, but only serving about 5% of the current 650,000 weekday riders at Penn Station.
