CITY PLANS TO REPLACE THOUSANDS OF PARKING SPACES WITH BIKE LANES
Following a rise in bicycle deaths – 17 so far this summer – the city announced a plan to construct 80 miles of protected bike lanes, eliminate thousands of street parking spaces, and increase police enforcement of drivers breaking laws that put bikers at risk, including blocking bike lanes and failing to yield.
The plan also focuses on "priority districts" with high bike ridership but limited protected bike lanes like Bay Ridge and Midwood. Since many of the fatalities have been caused by trucks, the Department of Transportation will remove street parking in residential areas for use as loading zones to prevent double-parked trucks.
Over the next five years, the $58.4 million plan will add 80 miles of bike lanes, and focus on “design, enforcement, legislation, policy and education” to make the city more friendly and safe for bicyclists.
